Catherine O’Hara Dies at 71: The Comic Virtuoso who made Every Single Character Unforgettable
Catherine O’Hara built a decades-long career in character comedy. Her timing and facial control was deliberate. For more than five decades, she shaped some of the widely recognized characters in modern film and television, across satire, absurd comedy, and drama.
The Canadian-American actress and comedian died on January 30, 2026, at age 71 following a brief illness, according to her representatives. Her passing marks the loss of a distinctive comedic performer whose work balanced theatricality with emotional realism.

Born on March 4, 1954, in Toronto, O’Hara began in Toronto’s improv scene. She joined The Second City at a young age, a well-known improv institution. There, she developed the a character-driven approach. Her breakthrough arrived with SCTV, the cult sketch series that launched several careers. O’Hara stood out for her wide range. One moment she was playing a melodramatic soap actress, the next a hilariously mundane suburban mother Her timing was consistent.
Hollywood soon followed. To many audiences, she became widely recognizable as Kate McCallister in Home Alone the frantic, determined mother racing across continents to reach her child. The performance anchored the film emotionally and helped establish it as a holiday classic. She brought similar comic energy to Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice, crafting a portrait of eccentric domesticity that remains popular and lent her voice to animated classics like The Nightmare Before Christmas. In Christopher Guest’s mockumentaries. Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, and A Mighty Wind she worked extensively in improvised mockumentaries sculpting characters that were detailed and character-specific.

Later, she reached a new audience. As Moira Rose on Schitt’s Creek, O’Hara created a character that was highly theatrical, sculptural wigs, ornate diction, and a wardrobe that seemed to exist in its own universe. The character also showed vulnerability and fierce maternal loyalty. The role earned her an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild Award, and received widespread attention.
Even in her seventies, she continued working, appearing in streaming series and high-profile productions that included dramatic roles. Off-screen, O’Hara kept her personal life private. She married production designer Bo Welch in 1992, and the couple raised two sons while maintaining long careers in the industry. Colleagues frequently described her as generous, sharp, and collaborative.

The 59-year-old actress and her 15-year-old daughter attended Day 13 of the tournament, where they offered two distinct takes on courtside dressing. The pair’s resemblance was particularly striking, even as their outfits took different directions. Kidman’s look leaned towards classic separates, while Faith’s dress brought a softer element to her appearance.
The U.S. Open outing follows a busy few weeks for Kidman, who is currently promoting Practical Magic 2 with Sandra Bullock. The sequel to the 1998 film reunites the actresses as sisters Gillian and Sally Owens, with the new story introducing the next generation of the Owens family.
Faith has accompanied her mother during part of the film’s promotional run. Earlier this month, she travelled with Kidman to Sydney, where the actress made a surprise appearance at a special screening of Practical Magic 2. The two were also photographed together at Sydney Airport on September 6.

Her appearances with Kidman have extended beyond the film’s current press tour. In October 2025, Faith joined her mother and older sister, Sunday Rose, at Matthieu Blazy’s debut Chanel show in Paris. Faith also appeared alongside Kidman in the actress’s debut campaign after she became a global ambassador for Clé de Peau Beauté.
While Sunday Rose has pursued modelling more visibly, Faith has appeared more selectively in the public eye. Her latest appearance at the U.S. Open offered another glimpse of her personal style, this time alongside her mother at one of New York’s biggest sporting events.

Lady Gaga has reportedly become a mother for the first time, welcoming a baby with her fiancé, Michael Polansky.
The singer and Polansky are said to have welcomed their first child together, with reports emerging on Friday, September 11. The couple were also reportedly seen with their baby in Northern California.
Details surrounding the birth remain private. The baby’s name, sex and exact date of birth have not been disclosed, while Gaga has yet to make a public announcement.

Gaga has spoken about her desire to have children in the past. In a 2025 interview, she described motherhood as her “next starring role” and discussed her hopes for having a family of her own.
Her relationship with Polansky began in 2019, and the pair spent much of the Covid-19 lockdown together in Malibu. Gaga publicly confirmed their engagement in 2024 after introducing Polansky as her fiancé during the Paris Olympics.

Polansky, a Harvard-educated entrepreneur and philanthropist, has worked with the Parker Institute for Cancer Immunotherapy and has been involved in charitable projects. He has largely stayed out of the spotlight while supporting Gaga’s career and philanthropic work.
The reported arrival comes after a major period in Gaga’s career. She released her album Mayhem in 2025 and continued with live performances and other professional commitments.

For now, Gaga and Polansky have kept details about their baby private. Unlike many major moments in the singer’s career, the arrival of her first child has not been accompanied by a detailed public announcement.
The couple have not yet shared further details, leaving fans waiting for Gaga’s own confirmation and, potentially, the first glimpse into her new life as a mother.
Katie Holmes and Jason Bard Yarmosky brought their new relationship into the New York fashion spotlight on September 9, stepping out together for Cult Gaia’s Spring/Summer 2027 show during New York Fashion Week.
The pair arrived at the Gilder Center hand in hand, smiling as they made their way through the park before taking their seats in the front row. Inside, Holmes and Yarmosky appeared affectionate as they sat alongside fashion icons Iman and Helena Christensen, turning what could have been another front-row appearance into a notable moment for the newly public couple.

Their relationship first drew public attention in July, when they were seen together at a screening of Olivia Wilde’s film The Invite in East Hampton. The two were photographed holding hands and laughing together, prompting early speculation about their relationship.
Their appearances together continued through the summer. They were seen at a Ferragamo event in Bridgehampton and attended the Guild Hall Summer Gala, while also spending time together in Lake Como. Holmes and Yarmosky were later photographed at a Michael Kors dinner in East Hampton on August 20.

For the Michael Kors occasion, Holmes wore a purple draped satin tank dress from the designer, styled with red shoes and a cream clutch. Yarmosky accompanied her in an all-black look, with the couple photographed holding hands and smiling at each other during the evening. Holmes also posed with Naomi Watts and Christy Brinkley at the event.
The couple also took their relationship beyond the event circuit. Holmes made their romance Instagram official with a birthday tribute to Yarmosky, referring to him as “the best of the best,” while the pair subsequently shared glimpses from their Italian getaway, including time in Lake Como and a mountaintop hike.
Yarmosky, a professional fine artist, has increasingly appeared alongside Holmes as their relationship has become more public.
