Biggest Snubs and Surprises at the 2026 Actor Awards Nominations
The nominations for the 32nd Annual Actor Awards, formerly known as the Screen Actors Guild Awards, have officially been announced. While some frontrunners strengthened their place in this year’s awards race, several high-profile names were surprisingly left out, making this year’s nominations one of the most debated in recent memory.
Announced on January 7 by Abbott Elementary star Jannelle James and Heated Rivalry actor Connie Storrie, the nominations spotlighted major contenders such as “One Battle After Another”, “Sinners”, “The Pitt”, “The Studio”, and “Adolescence”.
Dwayne Johnson was surprisingly left out, even though his performance in “The Smashing Machine” had received plenty of praise. His co-star Emily Blunt was also overlooked, despite both actors receiving nominations at other major award shows. The absence was especially notable given the strong momentum going into awards season.

Another notable omission was Cynthia Erivo, whose performance in “Wicked: For Good” had positioned her as a strong contender. While Ariana Grande earned a supporting actress nominations for reprising her role as Glinda, Erivo’s absence marked a sharp contrast to the franchise’s awards success during the 2025 awards season.
Television fans were equally shocked by the lack of individual nominations for Kristen Bell in “Nobody Wants This” and Jeremy Allen White, who was overlooked both for “The Bear” and his portrayal of Bruce Springsteen in “Deliver Me from Nowhere.”
Veteran actors George Clooney and Adam Sandler received no recognition for “Jay Kelly,”despite widespread expectations.
International cinema didn’t fare much better, as Joachim Trier’s “Sentimental Value” is widely regarded as an awards-season favorite, failed to secure acting nominations for its ensemble cast, including Elle Fanning and Renate Reinsve.
While some omissions disappointed fans, several unexpected nominations injected excitement into the list, Kate Hudson emerged as one of the surprises, earning a lead actress nomination for “Song Sung Blue,” breaking into one of the most competitive categories of the year.

Miles Caton had two nominations for “Sinners,” coming right after his Critics Choice Award win. At just 20 years old, Caton’s riding success signals a promising future in the industry.
Another pleasant shock was Odessa A’Zion, who earned recognition for “Marty Supreme,” further solidifying the film’s strong showing alongside lead actor Timothée Chalamet. Jesse Plemons also defied expectations with a lead actor nominations for his role in “Bugonia,” emerging as a potential dark-horse contender.
On the television side, “Stranger Things” received rare recognition in the stunt ensemble category for its final season, while Taylor Sheridan’s Landman surprised with nominations for both drama ensemble and stunt performance after being largely ignored elsewhere.
Perhaps the impressive breakthrough came from Chase Infiniti, whose performance in “One Battle After Another” earned widespread recognition. The film earned nominations in almost every acting category, marking Infiniti as one of the season’s most promising new talents.
Awards Season Heats Up
With the Actor Awards ceremony set to stream live on Netflix on March 1, these nominations have set the stage for what promises to be an exciting and closely watched awards season.
The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards took place on September 14 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, with Mariska Hargitay hosting the ceremony. Widow’s Bay won Outstanding Comedy Series, while The Pitt took Outstanding Drama Series for the second consecutive year. DTF St. Louis won Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.
Widow’s Bay led the telecast with six wins, including Outstanding Comedy Series, Lead Actor for Matthew Rhys, Supporting Actress for Kate O’Flynn, Supporting Actor for Stephen Root, Writing for Katie Dippold and Directing for Hiro Murai. The series finished the overall Emmy season with 14 awards, breaking the previous record of 13 held by The Studio.

Matthew Rhys also won Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for The Beast in Me, making him the first performer to win two lead acting Emmys in the same year. Noah Wyle won Lead Actor in a Drama Series for The Pitt, while Rhea Seehorn received Lead Actress in a Drama Series for Pluribus.
Jean Smart won Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for Hacks, her fifth consecutive Emmy in the category. The win brought her career total to eight, tying her with Cloris Leachman, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Allison Janney for the most acting Emmys won by a performer. Janney reached the same total after winning Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for The Diplomat.
Sally Field won Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for Remarkably Bright Creatures, becoming the oldest winner in the category. Tom Pelphrey won Supporting Actor in a Drama Series for Task, while Saul Metzstein and Vince Gilligan won for directing and writing in drama for Slow Horses and Pluribus, respectively.

The Creative Arts Emmy Awards were held on September 5 and 6, with additional winners announced across acting, variety, reality, animation, craft and technical categories. Those awards are part of the overall 2026 Emmy results but were presented separately from the September 14 Primetime telecast.
BTS will not submit music for consideration at the 2027 Grammy Awards. The announcement came shortly after the Recording Academy unveiled a new category, Best Asian Pop Music Performance.
In a joint statement posted to social media, the group confirmed that neither recent singles nor material from their March album “ARIRANG” would be entered this year.

“We have decided not to submit our work to this year’s Grammy Awards,” the statement read. “We hope music can be heard and loved for itself, beyond regions or languages.”
The statement reflects the group’s view that music should be judged on its own merits rather than being defined by region or language.
The Recording Academy introduced Best Asian Pop Music Performance to recognize excellence in K-pop, J-pop, C-pop and other Asian pop forms. To qualify, recordings must feature an Asian language prominently. Songs performed entirely in English are not eligible. The Academy described it as an expansion of representation.
BTS, however, framed the issue differently. Their statement suggests concern that geography and language could become the primary lens for evaluation, rather than the music itself.
It touches on a long-running debate: should international artists be celebrated within a dedicated category, or should they compete, and be judged, in the general field?
Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. said he was disappointed but respected the decision. He also clarified that artists who do submit to genre categories remain eligible for the top awards, Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Song of the Year.
The decision also comes at an important time for the group. “ARIRANG” is BTS’ first full album since all seven members completed military service and reunited. It was led by “SWIM,” an English-language single that became one of the group’s biggest releases of the year. Despite five prior Grammy nominations, including nominations for “Dynamite,” “Butter,” and “My Universe” with Coldplay, the group has yet to win a Grammy.

The decision marks a rare move by one of the world’s most influential music groups, choosing to step back from the Grammy submission process even as a new category appears designed to recognize more Asian pop artists.
Their absence will be noticed during the next Grammy season. The move is unlikely to diminish BTS’s standing as one of the world’s biggest music acts.
Whether the new category succeeds in broadening representation or further compartmentalizes it will be tested in the coming years. For now, BTS has made its stance clear. The focus, at least for 2027, is not on awards campaigns. It is on the idea that music should be heard on its own terms.

The animation and music categories highlighted KPop Demon Hunters, which took home Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song for “Golden.”
The Academy also recognized international films and documentaries. Sentimental Value won Best International Feature and “Mr. Nobody” Against Putin won Documentary Feature. The results reflected the strong international presence among this year’s nominees and winners.

The technical categories were distributed across several films. “Frankenstein” won several awards for its production design and “Avatar: Fire and Ash” won Best Visual Effects. “F1” won Best Sound.
One Battle After Another and Sinners emerged as the night’s leading winners, each securing multiple awards across major categories. Other movies won awards in categories.
