Signs Your Skin Barrier May Be Damaged

Have you ever wondered why your skin suddenly starts acting up? You’re following your skincare routine, using products that used to work well, yet somehow your skin stops responding the same way. Sometimes your serum starts stinging, your face feels unusually dry, or your skin suddenly becomes more sensitive. If this sounds familiar, your skin barrier might be the reason.

Think of your skin barrier like a protective wall, according to dermatologist Dr. Piliang, “Your skin barrier is basically your outer layer of the skin. It’s dead, not alive, and it’s made up of dead cells, lipids, proteins and fats that help protect your skin from the environment.”

But how do you know if your skin barrier is actually struggling?

Dryness and Tightness

One of the first signs of a damaged skin barrier is when your skin starts feeling dry or uncomfortable, even after you’ve applied moisturizer. This happens when the natural oils in your skin become disrupted. These oils, including ingredients like ceramides and fatty acids, help keep moisture locked in. Things like harsh skincare products, weather changes, or overdoing your routine can affect them, and in turn, your skin lose its ability to stay hydrated.

Redness and Irritation

A healthy skin barrier helps protect your skin from outside factors like pollution, weather changes, and strong skincare ingredients. But when that protection becomes weaker, these things can irritate your skin easily. You start to experience things like redness, discomfort, or a burning sensation, especially when using products that never caused problems before.

Flakiness and Rough Texture

A damaged skin barrier can also affect how smooth your skin looks and feels. When your skin starts having difficulty with retaining moisture, it becomes dry and flaky. Dead skin cells begins build up on the surface instead of shedding properly, leaving your complexion looking dull and uneven. This is why your skin starts to feel rough to touch or your makeup may not sit as smoothly as it used to.

Increased Sensitivity to Products

Another common sign is when your skin becomes more sensitive than usual. A product that once felt soothing, starts to sting or cause irritation. Even gentle products, including fragrance-free options, may feel uncomfortable. If your barrier is damaged, your skin becomes unable to defend itself against ingredients and outside stressors. This can make your skin react faster and more strongly than before.

How to Protect Your Skin Barrier

Use warm water, not hot

Hot water can strip your skin of its natural oils. Stick to lukewarm water and be gentle when washing your face.

Choose a mild, fragrance-free cleanser

Harsh soaps can irritate your skin. Go for a gentle, soap-free formula instead.

Don’t over-exfoliate or over-cleanse

Too much exfoliating or washing can weaken your skin barrier. Keep your routine simple and avoid scrubbing.

Moisturize consistently

Look for ingredients like ceramides and fatty acids that help support your skin barrier. Also use ingredients like petrolatum, hyaluronic acid, glycerin, honey, and urea help draw moisture into the skin and keep it hydrated.

One of the best things you can do is simplify your routine and give your skin time to recover, avoid introducing too many new products at once. If your skin isn’t improving or still feels irritated, consider consulting a dermatologist about the products your skin actually needs.

The 5 Best Beauty Products to Pack When Travelling

Published

on

Travelling doesn’t mean abandoning your beauty routine, but it does call for a more considered approach to what goes into your suitcase. From sun protection to multipurpose makeup, these five essentials help you maintain your routine without overpacking.

Sunscreen

Sunscreen is essential for protecting your skin from ultraviolet (UV) radiation, whether you’re exploring a new city or spending time at the beach. Choose a broad-spectrum formula with SPF 30 or higher, and opt for a water-resistant option if you expect to swim or sweat.

Reapply as directed on the packaging, particularly after swimming or towelling off. A travel-size bottle saves space, but ensure you pack enough for the duration of your trip.

Moisturiser

Air conditioning, dry cabin air and changes in climate can leave your skin feeling dry or tight. A moisturiser helps maintain hydration and supports the skin’s protective barrier, making it a useful addition to your travel beauty bag.

Choose a formula suited to your skin type. Lightweight lotions or gel-creams may suit oily skin, while richer creams can be more comfortable for dry skin. Packing your usual moisturiser also means you won’t need to experiment with unfamiliar products while away.

Gentle Facial Cleanser

A facial cleanser removes sweat, excess oil, dirt and makeup accumulated throughout the day. Choose a gentle formula that suits your skin, preferably one you already use regularly.

If you wear waterproof or long-lasting makeup, you may need a separate makeup remover or cleansing balm. Micellar water is another option, depending on your skin and the products you use. A compact bottle of your regular cleanser can help save space in your luggage.

Multipurpose Makeup

Multipurpose makeup makes it easier to create different looks without carrying a full makeup collection. A cream blush that doubles as a lip colour, for example, can work for daytime outings and evening plans.

A tinted moisturiser is another option for light coverage and hydration, although its SPF should not replace dedicated sunscreen. Choose products that complement one another and suit your itinerary rather than packing several items with similar functions.

Leave-In Conditioner or Hair Serum

Your haircare needs may change depending on your destination, hair texture and styling routine. A leave-in conditioner can help soften hair and make detangling easier, while a hair serum may help smooth frizz and add shine.

You don’t necessarily need both. Choose the product that addresses your hair’s main needs, and if you’re travelling with heat-styling tools, check that your chosen product specifically offers heat protection.

Sunscreen, moisturiser, a gentle cleanser, multipurpose makeup and a suitable haircare product provide a practical starting point for your travel beauty bag. Choose products that suit your skin, hair and destination, and pack only what you expect to use.

Billie Eilish has traded her shoulder-length strawberry-blonde hair for a shorter, choppy bob. The singer revealed the cut in an Instagram video on October 22, showing off a chin-length style with textured ends and a light auburn shade.

In the video, Eilish sits in a car, smiling as she turns her head from side to side to show the haircut from different angles. She set the clip to Pavement’s 1994 song “Cut Your Hair” and captioned the post with a kissing-face emoji.

The new cut follows an earlier hair transformation she shared on October 5, when she posted photos of herself with a shoulder-length bob in a strawberry-blonde shade. The latest version is shorter, with uneven ends that fall around her chin.

Eilish has changed her hair color several times throughout her career. She became known for her black hair with neon-green roots before debuting platinum blonde hair in 2021, ahead of the release of her album Happier Than Ever. She has since worn darker shades and auburn tones, making the current look another shift from her signature styles.

The singer has also been working on her feature-film acting debut in The Bell Jar, an adaptation of Sylvia Plath’s 1963 novel directed by Sarah Polley. Eilish plays Esther Greenwood in the upcoming film. She was photographed with auburn hair while filming in Toronto earlier this year.

For now, Eilish’s latest Instagram post puts the focus on a shorter cut and a warmer hair color, adding another look to her history of experimenting with different styles.

Hailey Bieber Debuts Her Darkest Hair Color in Over a Decade

Hailey Bieber has gone brunette in one of her biggest hair changes in years, debuting a deep brown shade that marks her darkest color in more than a decade.

The new look was revealed by hairstylist Irinel de León on September 19, with Bieber wearing long, dark brown hair that falls well below her shoulders. Colorist Matt Rez created the new shade, while de León worked on the cut and styling. Extensions by Priscilla Valles were also used to add length.

The change comes after Bieber has worn several lighter brunette and blonde shades in recent years. Her previous looks have included caramel highlights, warmer brown tones and an icy blonde bob, which she wore earlier this year.

This latest color is closer to a deep chocolate brown, with rich espresso tones running through it. The longer cut includes layers and shorter pieces around her face, giving the style more shape.

Bieber has worn dark hair before, with 2015 providing the closest comparison. She attended that year’s Met Gala with dark brunette hair, making her latest transformation a return to a color she has not worn at this depth for years.

The timing of the change is also notable because Bieber previously said she planned to avoid major hair changes for a period after giving birth. Her latest look marks a much more dramatic change from the lighter shades she had been wearing.

Her makeup was kept relatively soft against the darker hair. Makeup artist Mary Phillips used Rhode products alongside products from her own line, including blush and pink-toned lip products.

The new brunette also comes with considerably more length than some of Bieber’s recent shorter styles. Instead of the cropped cuts she has worn in the past, she is now wearing her hair long, layered and deep brown.

After experimenting with blonde, highlighted brunette and lighter brown shades, Bieber has returned to one of her darkest hair colors yet, giving her latest beauty look a distinctly different feel.
