2026 Met Gala Dress Code Announced: Fashion Is Art
The Met Gala has confirmed its theme for 2026: “Fashion Is Art.” The announcement was made by Vogue on February 23 for the 2026 event.
The dress code accompanies the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, “Costume Art,” which explores the connections between clothing and visual art.
The gala will take place on Monday, May 4, 2026, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. It will be co‑chaired by Beyoncé, Nicole Kidman, Venus Williams, and Anna Wintour.

The theme encourages guests to interpret clothing as a form of artistic expression. Rather than specifying a particular style or color palette, the dress code invites guests to show cultural and historical influences. Andrew Bolton, curator in charge of the Costume Institute, notes that fashion and the human form have long been central to visual culture, which the exhibition seeks to illustrate.
The “Costume Art” exhibition opens to the public on May 10, 2026, in the Costume Institute’s new Condé M. Nast Galleries. It will feature nearly 400 garments displayed alongside artworks from different periods, show the connection between clothing and visual art over time. The show highlights a variety of body types and forms, examining how fashion interacts with art from classical to contemporary contexts.

In a press statement, the actress shared, “It’s been so much fun to collaborate with Law and the On team on these essentials, we wanted to create pieces that feel versatile and easy to wear, styles that move with you across different moments. We started with the idea of making people feel confident and effortless, and we built everything out from there. Working with Spike Jonze brought that vision to life in a really special way, the world he created gave it a whole new dimension.”

The campaign is supported by a short film by Academy Award-winning director Spike Jonze, highlighting the creative process behind the collaboration. Titled Shape of Dreams, the film presents Zendaya’s imagined design space, “The Dream Lab” where ideas evolve into final products through a staged visual progression. It was shot by photographer Sean Thomas.
The collection will be available in four colorways: Wolf Alloy, Dew Spruce, Fig, and Black Ink, set to be released on April 16, 2026, through On and selected retailers, both in-store and online.

Streep and Wintour are not interested in trading places in real life. Wintour dismissed the idea of acting, noting she has no skills for it and would struggle with tasks such as singing, dancing, or cooking. Streep, on the other hand, said she would not want to take on the responsibilities of running a large organization like Vogue, including managing its operations and editorial responsibilities.
Streep’s character, Miranda Priestly, the editor-in-chief of the fictional magazine Runway, was inspired by Wintour. The 2006 film was based on the 2003 novel by Lauren Weisberger.
