James Barker, an executive producer on Love Island USA, has died at the age of 40 after suffering an unexpected medical emergency while the reality series was filming its eighth season in Fiji. ITV America and Peacock confirmed his death on June 15, describing the loss as one that has been deeply felt across the production and the wider television community.
At the time of his death, Love Island USA Season 8 was actively filming in Fiji. The season premiered on Peacock on June 2 and is hosted by Ariana Madix.

Barker joined Love Island USA in 2020 as a story producer before rising through the production ranks. He later became executive producer and served in that role for the show’s last three seasons. In addition to overseeing production, he was involved in post-production and helped shape the music featured on the series.
In a joint statement, ITV America and Peacock paid tribute to Barker and acknowledged the impact of his loss across the production.
“James’ unimaginable loss has been deeply felt across not just the entire Love Island USA production, but throughout all of ITV and Peacock,” the companies said. They described him as a valued member of the television family whose kindness, talent and dedication left a lasting impression on colleagues and collaborators. The statement also extended condolences to his partner, family, friends and coworkers.
ITV America and Peacock confirmed that Barker will be honored during the June 16 episode of Love Island USA.

Before joining Love Island USA, Barker began his career in unscripted television at Leftfield Pictures in 2021. During his time there, he worked on series including Pawn Stars, Counting Cars and Forged in Fire. He later joined ITV America, where he worked on the Emmy-winning reboot of Queer Eye and eventually became a co-executive producer.
His credits also included Love Island Games and projects produced by Scout Productions, Sharp Entertainment and Kinetic Content.
Outside of television, Barker had a background in music and spent two decades working as a DJ, according to reports.
A cause of death has not been publicly released, and ITV America and Peacock have not disclosed additional details about the medical emergency that led to his death.
