Grey’s Anatomy Alum Isaiah Washington Breaks Silence on Wife Jenisa’s Death

Isaiah Washington has spoken publicly about the death of his wife, Jenisa Marie Garland-Washington. This comes more than a year after she died following a sudden medical emergency.

Washington, 63, revealed the news in an Instagram post on October 3, 2026. He said she collapsed on May 31, 2025 and died nine days later, on June 9. According to him, Jenisa had a massive hemorrhagic stroke. They were married for 29 years. 

Washington said the death came as a shock to him and their entire family. He explained why he had not spoken publicly about her death earlier.

“I don’t know if this is an appropriate post,” he admitted, “because Jenisa Washington was extremely private, but I guess I just have to be reprimanded from her on the other side.”

Washington used the post to warn people about severe headaches. 

“Listen, y’all…some headaches are not just headaches or migraines, they can be much worse and a warning sign,” he emphasized. “Get a brain scan if you can and take those headaches seriously.”

The couple met in Los Angeles in 1995 after being introduced by comedian Reggie McFadden. Washington and Jenisa married on Valentine’s Day in 1996.

Together, they had three children, Tyme, Iman and Isaiah V. Jenisa largely stayed away from the entertainment spotlight while Washington built his acting career. She was a fashion designer, and the couple launched the clothing line SOLD Apparel in 1999. 

Despite Washington’s public career, the couple  kept their family life private. In his announcement, Washington paid tribute to the role Jenisa played in their family. He said their children continue to carry her legacy.

His announcement received messages of support from friends and colleagues.

“So very sorry Isaiah ️,” Viola Davis commented on the post. 

Debi Mazar added, “My condolences Isaiah To you and your family.

Washington later connected Jenisa’s story to the death of his longtime friend Reggie McFadden. McFadden, who died in October 2026. 

Washington played Dr Preston Burke on Grey’s Anatomy. He left Grey’s Anatomy in 2007 after three seasons and later returned in 2014. He announced his retirement from acting in 2023.
