Charlize Theron brought Netflix’s ‘Apex’ promotion to Times Square with a live climbing stunt staged on a billboard structure, as part of the film’s rollout in Times Square.
The activation was built around a rock-climbing wall fitted onto a large billboard. Theron climbed the installation while secured in a full safety harness, completing ascent and descent in front of a crowd gathered below. The setup was in Times Square.

The film places Theron in the role of Sasha, a woman who heads into the Australian wilderness on what begins as a solo kayaking adventure.
The story changes when she meets Ben, played by Taron Egerton, who leads her into a high-stakes situation described in official synopsis materials as “a white-knuckle fight for survival against a ruthless predator.” The film presents Theron’s character as a survivor in a life-threatening ordeal.
Directed by Baltasar Kormákur and written by Jeremy Robbin, Apex is centres on survival in extreme terrain, with Theron’s character portrayed as scrappy and tenacious throughout the story. The film began streaming on Netflix on Friday, April 24.

Preparation for the role included rock climbing training, which Theron undertook for the first time specifically for the film. She described the experience as enjoyable, noting in an interview with PEOPLE that she had never climbed before except for trees during her childhood in Africa, adding, “It’s great. It’s so much fun.”

Netflix shared with PEOPLE that she spent weeks working with professional climber Beth Rodden in preparation for the production’s high-risk terrain.
