Nicolas Cage Says He’s Currently a “Little Bit Homeless”
Nicolas Cage is staying in hotels after a massive sinkhole damaged the driveway of his Malibu home, disrupting his living arrangements and changing his Halloween plans. The 62-year-old actor revealed his situation during an appearance at Los Angeles Comic Con on October 31, while discussing how he intended to celebrate the holiday.
“I’m currently a little bit homeless,” Cage told the audience. “Something happened to my house in Malibu, so I’m just sort of living in hotels.” He explained that staying away from home meant missing out on the usual trick-or-treaters he would have welcomed on Halloween.
The actor’s comments came nearly two months after a large sinkhole opened outside his oceanfront residence on Sea Level Drive in Malibu. The collapse swallowed a substantial section of his driveway, leaving a deep crater near the property. The hole measured approximately 25 feet deep and 30 by 60 feet wide, according to information released by the city.

The damage also affected access to neighbouring homes. On September 8, Malibu declared a local emergency and issued evacuation orders for 31 residences after the collapse blocked the only road connecting the beachside neighbourhood to the surrounding area. Seven homes were red-tagged because of hazardous conditions, while another 24 were restricted because residents had lost safe vehicle access.
The situation also raised concerns about emergency response in the area. The remaining section of the road was too narrow to accommodate larger emergency vehicles, including fire engines. Gas service was shut off after a leak was reported, while authorities warned that further coastal erosion could worsen conditions.
The sinkhole developed amid high tides, coastal flooding and heavy surf associated with Tropical Storm Marie. Its impact extended beyond Cage’s property, leaving other residents unable to access their homes by vehicle and requiring the homeowners’ association to coordinate repair work on the private road.

Cage has also taken steps to address the damage to his property. In October, he obtained four permits for work connected to the sinkhole. The planned work included debris removal, excavation to collect soil samples and the installation of sandbags to help protect the property from strong waves and further coastal erosion. The homeowners’ association is responsible for overseeing repairs to the private roadway.
It remains unclear when Cage will be able to return to his Malibu home. The road’s condition and the work required to make the area safe have also left neighbouring residents waiting for access to be restored.
Despite the disruption, Cage had plans to celebrate Halloween with his four-year-old daughter, August, whom he shares with his wife, Riko Shibata. He told the Comic Con audience that he intended to take her trick-or-treating somewhere in Santa Monica.

The actor also had a film planned for later that evening. After putting August to bed, he intended to watch Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror classic, The Shining, which he described as one of his favourite movies ever made. Cage also joked about the film’s director having received a Razzie nomination for Worst Director before praising Kubrick’s work on the production.
Cage and Shibata married in Las Vegas in February 2021. August is his youngest child. He also has two sons: Weston, 35, whom he shares with former partner Christina Fulton, and Kal-El, 21, from his previous marriage to Alice Kim.
For now, Cage’s hotel stays remain a temporary arrangement while the damage to his Malibu property and the surrounding road is addressed. His Halloween remarks have brought renewed attention to a sinkhole that has left dozens of households dealing with the consequences of the same coastal emergency.
