Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have publicly responded to claims made in a new biography by British author Tom Bower, dismissing the book’s content as unfounded and misleading. Their representative described the work as crossing “the line from criticism into fixation” and called it a “deranged conspiracy,” emphasising that many of the claims are speculative and not based on verifiable facts.

The biography, Betrayal: Power, Deceit and the Fight for the Future of the Royal Family, was published in The Times on 13 March 2026. It examines the Sussexes’ relationships with senior members of the British royal family and their activities since stepping back from senior royal duties in 2020.

Excerpts from the book claim that Queen Camilla referred to Meghan Markle as having “brainwashed” Prince Harry, and suggest that her influence contributed to tensions between the Duke of Sussex and other family members. The biography also asserts that Harry became more distant from friends and altered his communications following his marriage, while expressing concerns over his elder brother’s potential actions against him in the wake of controversies involving other family members.

The book critiques the couple’s involvement with the Invictus Games, implying that media coverage of their public profile sometimes overshadowed the event’s focus on competitors. In response, the Sussexes’ representative rejected these suggestions, and the Invictus Games Foundation reaffirmed that the event remains focused on supporting recovery and rehabilitation for wounded, injured, and sick service personnel.

Buckingham Palace and representatives of Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales, have not commented on the book or its claims, in keeping with longstanding policies regarding unauthorised biographies.

Harry and Meghan, who now reside in California with their children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, continue to pursue independent media, philanthropic, and business projects. Their spokesperson’s statement insist on the couple’s ongoing position of challenging narratives they consider inaccurate or sensationalised, highlighting their intent to protect both their personal and professional reputations.
