Healthy Foods That Might Be Making You Gain Weight
Foods associated with weight loss are commonly linked to overall health and balanced eating patterns. They are commonly recommended as part of a balanced diet, especially for people trying to manage their weight. However, weight gain is still possible when eating these foods, depending on portion sizes and overall calorie intake. Even if a product is lower in sugar, fat, or carbs, it is still possible to eat more than the body needs without noticing it. While they may offer nutrients, they are not always as low-calorie as people assume.
Here are some healthy foods that may work against your weight loss goals.
Granola

Granola is packed with nutritious ingredients such as oats, coconut, and seeds which can be filling and are considered a healthy breakfast option, although, many store-bought versions contain added sugar. This makes it more calorie-dense than expected, especially when eaten with yogurt or milk.
Avocados

Avocados are another example and are often seen as part of a healthy weight loss diet because they contain healthy fats and are rich in nutrients. A Toronto-based dietitian Abbey Sharp, RD, says that avocado contains monounsaturated fat, which is often associated with weight management but when “consumed in excess, they could add extra calories to your day” which could eventually hinder your weight loss.
Smoothies

While they often include fruits and vegetables, they can contain sugars, syrups, and high-calorie bases that increase the total calorie count. It’s best to opt for whole fruit because of the fiber is still intact which helps slow down digestion and improve satiety.
Greek yogurt

Flavored yogurt is another example that can be misleading. While plain Greek yogurt is high in protein, the flavored versions contain added sugars that reduce some of its nutritional benefits and increase calorie intake.
Peanut butter

This is also seen as a healthy snack. However, it is very easy to overeat. Just a few tablespoons can contain a high calorie content, especially if it is the sweetened or processed type.
These foods are not unhealthy on their own, but portion control and preparation matter. Eating them regularly without balance can lead to weight gain over time.
