The new season will be set in Jamaica Bay, New York. Issa López, who wrote and directed the fourth season, True Detective: Night Country, will return as showrunner, writer and director. Daniel Zelman will also join the writing and executive-producing team.

Created by Nic Pizzolatto, True Detective debuted on HBO in 2014. The anthology introduces a new cast and investigation with each season. Its first season starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, followed by Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams in Season 2, and Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff in Season 3. Jodie Foster and Kali Reis led the fourth season, which moved the story to Alaska.

Cage joins the series following roles in films including Leaving Las Vegas, National Treasure, Pig and Dream Scenario. He is also set to star in Spider-Noir, a television adaptation centred on the Marvel character. Banderas, whose film credits include The Mask of Zorro and The Legend of Zorro, also voices Puss in Boots in the Shrek franchise. His more recent work includes Babygirl and Tony, a biopic about chef and television personality Anthony Bourdain.

Both actors will serve as executive producers on the fifth season alongside López, Zelman, Pizzolatto and other members of the production team. HBO has yet to announce a release date.
